Ben stopped off at the small market and put four different kinds of beer into the cart, along with a supply of snacks, a large box of condoms, and a container of lube. Seemed like this not-so-big grocery store covered his needs perfectly.

“Doctor.” A voice behind him had his stomach falling. He was off the clock, but the curse of this town was that everyone knew he was a doctor. He pasted a smile on his face and turned to the person calling him. He didn’t feel any better when he got a look at who it was. Zoe Holt. He had a handle on the woman, whose pinched lips and narrowed eyes held a lifetime of condemnation. She’d brought her daughter Lucy in to see him last week, a slim, pretty, shy girl, who suffered from asthma. Zoe had said Lucy needed a checkup and he wasn’t going to argue, even though it appeared Liam was her doctor on record. He was still getting used to the small-town way of working things and anything really for a quiet life when Zoe was so insistent.

Only things had gone from bad to worse.

An asthma check became a blatant push of Lucy into a date with Ben.

It even included the age-old “it must be lonely for a city doctor so far from his family” crap.

Ben had smiled, said he was fine, enjoying the peace, working on projects, and that Lucy’s chest sounded fine, that she was good to go and party like any normal twenty-year-old.

Please, no more matchmaking.

“Lucy was so grateful for your diagnosis,” she said, loud enough that several people turned to stare at her. Ben had her pegged as the kind of person who talked at a volume which made sure she got noticed. The busybody, the one with the faintly evil streak in her psyche. Poor Lucy having a mom like that.

“No worries, ma’am,” he said as politely as he could manage.

“Is Lucy okay?” the nearest woman to them asked.

Zoe’s hand fluttered to her chest. “Such a strong, brave child.” She waited for Ben to agree.

Great. He was now in the middle of something he really didn’t want to be in. He wasn’t going to discuss medical diagnosis in the middle of the damned store. What did she want from him?

“We’d like to invite you to dinner,” she said. “To say thank you. Please say you will. Lucy was so pleased with all your personal attention.”

Oh fuck.

Zoe was being all southern-momma, extending hospitality. But Ben had seen Lucy’s eye rolls when her mom had suggested she stay in the room for the checkup for propriety’s sake. She was no more interested in Ben than he was in her.

How to handle that? Did he really give a fuck about the town, Zoe and her machinations to get her daughter on a date with him? Should he stay polite? He could do polite; he wasn’t a complete asshole.

“I don’t think I can. I’m busy that night.” He then realized what he’d done when she pounced on his mistake.
